Architecture, imagination and constraints

Architectural design possibilities are limited only by the imagination of the architect.

That sounds good, doesn’t it? But it’s entirely untrue. The test of an architect’s imagination and skill is more in how he or she designs given the constraints of a given project.

There is what you, the client want. There is what you can afford. There is what various governmental entities and the laws and regulations will allow. There is geography, topography … there is Nature, herself.

We’ll be discussing architectural design, imagination and all the real-world constraints here, on a regular basis, or at least as our schedules allow. We do have things to build, after all. ;-)
